Walk on Silchester Common
Saturday 10 June 2023, 10am
Join us for a walk on Silchester Common and Pamber Forest, and learn about the flora and fauna that make it their home.
Silchester Common is one of the largest fragments of lowland heathland in the South of England. It has very acidic, poor soil and the animals and plants that live here are often specialised to living in these conditions, and rare elsewhere. It provides a marked contrast to the adjacent Pamber Forest, an ancient broadleaf oak forest, which supports a wide variety of flora and fauna.
The walk will be led by Stephen, a local wildlife enthusiast. Starting from the Calleva Arms, we will take a ramble around Silchester Common and to the edge of Pamber Forest and talk about some of the plants and animals that live there.
Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome.
Numbers are limited so booking is essential. Please book by completing the Contact Us form.
Silchester Common is a natural environment and can be rough and muddy, so please wear appropriate footwear. The first part of the walk will be on relatively level ground, so wheelchair users would be welcome to try joining us for the start. However, the second half of the route is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
